Recently I got a lot of praise for a piece that I submitted to my friends at Con Tinta, a "Chicano/Latino Writers' Collective" as part of the celebration of National Poetry Month, or "NaPoMo." I must confess, I was surprised to learn that my poem was well-received. Not because I doubted my abilities or because I purposely submitted something of inferior quality, but because when collaborating with others I tend to think that I am still learning and am not "as good" as they are. I guess it is a symptom of one being one's own worst critic. But in any case, that poem has gotten much love and I am grateful and humbled by that. If you wish to read that poem it is titled "Border Crossing" , linked here to the "La Bloga" blog. You'll need to scroll down a little. Or better yet, read the entire post until you get to my poem! :)
It's hard to say what the value of a piece of literature is. This is especially true when that piece of literature is yours. That is further complicated when the piece is a poem. Who writes poetry? Why? What is the aim? I don't know. But I am a poet. I write because something inside me compels me. What is the value of a single poem? The same as a compilation of poems. How could you ask a parent to choose between his or her kids? They are all my children. But the question changes when you view it from the point of view of the receiver/reader. Then is when the true worth AND meaning of a poem comes into play. I would argue that that is the only instance when that question is valid. What is the value of a poem? You tell me.
