| I read a story today about the crusades. Made perfect sense seeing how things are going in the Middle East. Basically, the author said that what is going on is a failure of states and the success of non-states (such as ISIS) in filling in the gaps left by the "success" of the democratic capitalistic pursuit of nothing but consumption. In that void, in which not all people's of the world find meaning, something eventually rises to provide the alternative. Hence, ISIS. So since the states in that region are failing to repel and eradicate the non-state, what will likely happen is that another non-state entity will eventually rise to fight them, like the Knights Templar fought during the crusades back when people were still on MySpace...oh, what? Oh, it was longer than that? 700 years farther back? Wowza! In any case, the author writes that there are already groups of people from America and Europe starting to go out there to fight alongside Middle Eastern groups battling ISIS. What caught my attention after I started reading was the passage you see quoted on the side of this piece. Which brings me to the excerpt of a poem in my book that popped in mind. Check it: Free Isn't Freedom Thinner, drier, dehydrated, dead The minds of my generation Uninspired, endangered Consumed in the fires of this modern Mainstream nation Silent Alone Lost In the eternities of internet connections Talking loudly Saying nothing Reality TV Our ambassador to the world MTV our church Hollywood our Mecca Disney World Paradise!... Yes sometimes I stop and wonder: What is it we are all doing? What are we working toward? It seems only the perpetuation of the human race... Well, that and to keep making the rich even more insanely rich. Borrowed lives we live. We are owners of nothing except a treasure trove of illusions. No wonder some from our own communities are choosing to go out there and put their lives in danger to fight when they could just as easily stay home and enjoy the easy life and cash in on the rewards of this successful capitalism by shopping 'till they drop in an over-consumption coma. |
